Bathinda is located in the southern part of Indian Punjab. The Faridkot and Mukatsar districts in the North and West, the Sangrur and Mansa districts in the East and Haryana State in the South, bound it.
It's associated with the imprisonment of first empress of India, Razia Sultan in 1239 in the fort here.
Bala Rao inhabited this city in 965 AD and named this city as Bathinda after his caste name. This city also remained the capital of Rjaja Jaipal .

Bathinda is one of the biggest railway junctions in Northern India .
Area of the district is 3,34,405 hectares . This area forms a part of Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains. The alluvium is comprised of clay mixed with kankar, sandy clay and sand. During summer season temperature goes as high as 48°C (120.2°F) ; whereas in winter it touches freezing point (32°F). The tract of the Bathinda district lies in a dry zone. Most of the rains occurs from the South-West monsoon from mid July to middle of September and only a small portion falls during winter months.
